When you know someone is going through a difficult time, it can be a sensitive issue to approach. What is the best way to support someone if you believe they may be dealing with difficulties with their mental health? If you are already aware that there is something wrong and that someone you know is struggling it is important to act fast.

             In many cases, talking and allowing the person to share openly is one of the best solutions. That way it makes it easier to pinpoint what the exact problem is and what can be done to assist them. If you are not a trained professional, it is important to not make any assumptions about their particular diagnosis. Remaining neutral and not judgmental is imperative.

Be respectful and listen. Ask open-ended questions, without making assumptions. The person who may be dealing with a mental health issue, needs to feel that their feelings are validated. They need to feel seen and heard, that they are not a burden.

Once appropriate it would be beneficial to suggest seeking a therapist, or some trained professional. This is a good time to let them know that they should be selective in their search, making sure that whoever they find will be a good fit for them. Too often people do not interview their potential therapists. This way they can find someone who will really relate to them and their issues, someone that they can completely open up to without reservations. It is important to find that right one.
